The Office of Housing joined the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions in April of 2025 and is responsible for developing strategies to address the housing shortage and homelessness in New Mexico. With this move, New Mexico joins other states that recognize the many linkages between housing and workforce, including the lack of housing that the workforce can afford in many communities, the need for a strong construction workforce to build more housing, and the urgency of building a strong social services workforce to address the challenges underlying the homelessness crisis.

The Office is overseeing the distribution of $140 million appropriated from the general fund, Government Results and Opportunity (GRO) Fund, and capital outlay over the past two years for housing and homelessness. In August 2025, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the allocation of $120 million based on goals established in the appropriation, the potential for fully expending the funds by June 30, 2026, and the legislative intent to direct the money to projects in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, Las Cruces, and Doña Ana County .

Future funding opportunities will focus on site readiness and housing innovations, with the goal of building a pipeline of projects eligible for funding from current and future appropriations.

Request for Proposals

The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) Office of Housing has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking to identify and contract with qualified organizations capable of delivering eligible housing activities as outlined in the RFP. All proposals shall be for projects that result in the creation of new housing units that add to the housing stock of the community.
