Meterman Apprentice Technician

Apprentice Meterman/Meter Technician is an entry-level, utility-based position focused on learning to install, test, repair, and maintain electric (and sometimes gas/water) meters and AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) components. Under the supervision of a Journeyman, they develop skills in electrical theory, wiring, and safety, typically completing 8000 hours of on-the-job training in a four year period to become a qualified technician. Responsible for seeing that all employees abide by all safety regulations to insure a safe working environment.


Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assisting in Installation: Helps install, remove, and replace residential and commercial single-phase and three-phase meters. 
  • Learns to test, calibrate, and repair meter equipment, often working with transformers and complex metering systems. 
  • Assists in troubleshooting meter malfunctions and AMI communication devices. 
  • Adheres to strict utility, state, and federal safety regulations, including working on or near energized equipment. 
  • Documents test data, meter readings, and field notes accurately. 
  • Participates in classroom or textbook instruction on electrical theory, math, and rigging. 

$69,222

Salary in New Mexico based on the Occupational Information Network (O*Net).

Who Can Be an Accounting Technician?

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED. 
  • Ability to use hand tools, read schematics, and understand basic electricity. 
  • Involves working outdoors, often in inclement weather, and requires driving to various sites. 
  • Must be available for "after hours" or emergency callouts. 

Apprenticeship Program

The program is a 4 year program, divided into levels (I, II, III, IV) where responsibilities increase, allowing the apprentice to perform more complex, unsupervised work as they progress toward Journeyman certification.
