Who Can Be a Sheet Metal Worker?
Must be 18 years of age, have a High School Diploma/GED, be able to pass a pre-hire drug test and background check for many jobs, provide two forms of ID and be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program: convert blueprints into shop drawings to construct or assemble sheet metal products, determine project requirements such as scope and assembly sequences using blueprints, drawings, or written/verbal instructions; lay out, measure, and mark dimensions; fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, or bonds to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items; trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, or smooth surfaces, seams, or joints of assembled parts using hand tools or portable power tools. Abilities include but are not limited to near vision, multilimb coordination, visualization, information ordering, and arm-hand steadiness.)
