Substation Electrician Apprenticeship Program

As a Substation Technician Apprentice, you’ll work under the guidance of experienced technicians and engineers to support the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical substations. This hands-on role is designed to develop your technical knowledge and practical skills in high-voltage systems, safety protocols, and diagnostic procedures. You’ll assist with tasks such as equipment installation, inspections, testing, and troubleshooting while learning to interpret blueprints and technical diagrams. The position requires adherence to strict safety standards and a willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions. This is a developmental role that prepares you for advancement to a journeyman or technician-level position

Who Can Be a Substation Electrician?

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. 
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or other high school equivalency credential is required for hire at Sandia National Laboratories. 
  • Applicants must provide an official high school transcript, GED certificate, or other high school equivalency credential(s). 
  • If applicable, applicant may submit official transcripts for any post-high school education. 
  • Applicants must submit a copy of a DD Form 214 (Discharge and Separation Report) or equivalent to verify military training and or experience, if the applicant is a veteran and wishes to receive credit for previous related experience. 
  • Applicant must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others. 
  • Must possess or be eligible to be granted a security clearance. Must pass a drug screening administered by the Laboratories.

    Develop, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. Analyze user needs and develop software solutions. Design software or customize software for client use with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency.

    Plumber?

    Assemble, install, alter, and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. May install heating and cooling equipment and mechanical control systems.

    Raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. May erect metal storage tanks and assemble prefabricated metal buildings.

    Perform preliminary work with the material and tools of the trade; residential and commercial rough wiring and finish work including the installation of various kinds of wires, cables, and conduits per the National Electrical Code; industrial lighting and service installation; motors controls and installation including emergency generators, relays, and timing devices.
