Career Pathway Agreement with the U.S. Forest Service
(Taos, NM) – Today, December 11, 2019, the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) signed an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service in Taos to provide a career pathway program for participants in the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC). RMYC is an AmeriCorps program where participants gain valuable experience in the skills that employers, like the U.S. Forest Service, need by maintaining public lands.
The program will involve staff from Carson National Forest Service, NMDWS, and RMYC working together to provide training to members on specific skills and navigation guidance on the federal hiring system. The program started with a workshop held today at the Youth Corps offices in Taos for current Corps members interested in working for the U.S. Forest Service.
“The Forest Service, the Carson in particular, truly values diverse talent and those young people interested in strengthening their connection to the Land and the people of New Mexico,” said James Duran, Forest Supervisor at the Carson National Forest. “That’s why this program is so important, because it allows us an avenue to find those individuals and is a great opportunity to grow future land stewards right here in our own back yard.”
“This program will provide pathways to great jobs and help the outdoor recreation economy in New Mexico thrive,” said Bill McCamley, Secretary of the New Mexico Workforce Solutions Department. “It is part of Governor Lujan Grisham’s plan to provide career opportunities for everyone and the Department will be using this as a model for similar agreements with employers for all AmeriCorps New Mexico programs.”
