Work-based learning (WBL) is a strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills and develop their employability.

WBL includes a variety of arrangements including apprenticeships, work placement and informal learning on the job.

A Business Mentor is a key partner in a WBL experience for young people. A business mentor sets realistic goals for the student to acquire, engages and supervises them to complete their tasks and is a role model for the student to emulate.

What Is Work-Based Learning?

Work-based learning is designed to provide students or adult professionals with practical work experience and skill development within a desired occupation or profession. Some are paid, and some are unpaid.

Why Offer Work-Based Learning?

Although there are many benefits for students or adult professionals to participate in a work-based learning experience, employers also benefit.

Hosting a Work-Based Learning Experience

Hosting a student or adult professional requires planning, but once you create a plan you have a tool to utilize annually. You also will learn a lot of lessons on the way. A business's work culture varies, it is encouraged to note lessons learned and modify your next experience process accordingly so both you and your participants get the most out of the experience.
