Connecting Your Students to Work-Based Learning Experiences

Developing a career pathway and gaining on-the-job experience is critical to the future success of New Mexico's students and our workforce talent pipeline.

Some of the most important decisions our youth will have to make involve their education, occupation and job. Experience in the workplace during middle, high school and college will not only empower them to make sound choices but also give them the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom.

Are you interested in pointing your students to resources that will help them with their future job success and career pathway development?

Create a Job Shadow Opportunity

Empowering Educators to Provide Students with Career Exploration Opportunities

Career exploration activities provide students with an opportunity to learn about jobs and occupations. They also help students understand the connection between their education and future career pathways, increasing the potential for graduation and the attainment of certificates and/or degrees.

There is a lot that goes into planning career exploration activities for students. Below are some resources for educators that might be interested in what goes into planning a successful internship or job shadow program between their school, employers, and students. Resources include various generic forms and descriptions from other schools that have successfully implemented programs.

Planning a Job Shadow

Job shadowing is a great opportunity for our future workforce to gain valuable insight through real and relevant learning as they begin to determine the paths they will take post-high school. The goal is for students to come away with a better understanding of their field of interest and the skills needed to be successful.

Download the following packet of generic forms to accompany the best practices that have been provided online by the Oregon Department of Education and their successful Internship Dual Credit Program with a local high school and community college.

Host a Career Fair

Planning a Career Fair

Career day can help students prepare for their future careers and plan the track of education they will need to follow. Students will get a chance to learn about different careers while networking with local companies in that field. It is important to start early when planning a career day to make sure there are enough participants.

Host Mock Interviews

The goal of mock interviews is to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their soft skills, and to help reduce the stress and anxiety that may surround a young person during their first interview, whether it’s for college or a career. This opportunity allows employers to provide industry-specific insight to students and postdocs to strengthen their candidacy within your field. Students will receive valuable feedback on what they are doing well and areas that they need to improve.
