AmeriCorps New Mexico to Celebrate César Chávez Day of Service

(Albuquerque, NM) – The Serve New Mexico Commission, in partnership with Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico, will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights activist César Chávez with a Day of Service on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

AmeriCorps New Mexico members from across the state and in all streams of service, will support food distribution efforts by assisting food pantries in the Roadrunner Food Bank network in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Taos, Gallup, and Ruidoso. Service activities will include site organizing, direct food distribution, food box construction, and other activities. COVID-19 safety protocols will be enforced throughout the day.

“Governor Lujan Grisham believes passionately in an economy that works for everyone,” said Bill McCamley, Workforce Solutions Department Cabinet Secretary. “Our department protects workers’ rights and enforces fair labor laws and I’m pleased that our Commission will be carrying out service projects in honor of César Chávez, especially when so many families are experiencing food insecurity during this time.”

The Serve New Mexico Commission, which oversees the state’s AmeriCorps program, is under the administration of the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. The Commission administers the state’s AmeriCorps grant funding award from the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps members of all ages and backgrounds are helping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through national service in New Mexico.
