What Will You Do as an AmeriCorps Member?

The service activities of AmeriCorps members will depend on the program. However, here is a sampling of member service activities by focus area:

Education

  • Providing targeted tutoring in language arts and math to students in high priority schools who tested below grade level;
  • Placing members as service-learning coordinators in schools and after-school programs; and,
  • Improving the quality and availability of child development programs by serving in day care, Head Start centers and preschool programs.

Albuquerque Sign Language Academy

The Albuquerque Sign Language Academy proposes an operational grant in the AmeriCorps Focus Area of Learning Loss Interventions. Albuquerque Sign Language Academy will be responsible for developing an AmeriCorps intervention that will result in improved academic performance in literacy and/or math.

  • Eliminating environmental risks, especially those that affect children and youth, such as lead poisoning and radon exposure;
  • Engaging community volunteers in ongoing environmental monitoring, such as water quality testing; and,

EcoServants

EcoServants is a local grass roots nonprofit in Ruidoso, NM, established in 2003. AmeriCorps members serve in either Lincoln or Otero County and help improve, restore, or sustainably create trails, remove noxious weeds, improve parks, provide forest monitoring, stand examinations, participate in White Mountain Search and Rescue, and provide disaster relief.

Veterans and Military Families

  • Connect veterans and military families to education, jobs, housing, and earned benefits
  • Welcome veterans into national service roles, thereby leveraging skills to address pressing challenges such as responding to disasters, building homes, mentoring youth, and supporting fellow veterans.

Examples of programs include: Building capacity at veteran serving organizations, transitional assistance back to civilian life, disabled veterans coaching, military children tutoring


Healthy Futures

  • Focus on health care access, aging in place, food security, substance use disorder, public safety, and homelessness. 
  • Address community health needs, including health education, mental health, and childhood obesity, especially in communities where the need is greatest. 

Examples of programs include: addressing food insecurity, community gardens, facilitation of support groups, substance use prevention programs, resources for recovery support
