More than $2 million allocated for New Mexico AmeriCorps programs

(Albuquerque, NM) – Albuquerque, NM – The Serve New Mexico Commission, which oversees the state’s AmeriCorps program, has approved $2,547,943 in funding for the 2020-2021 AmeriCorps program year beginning September 1.

Administered by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS), the Serve New Mexico Commission awards funding provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) through a competitive application process overseen by professional staff and a Governor-appointed Board of Commissioners.

“The more than five hundred AmeriCorps member positions created by this funding will help New Mexico meet critical challenges.” said Bill McCamley, NMDWS Cabinet Secretary. “During the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve seen our members and programs redouble their efforts under extraordinarily challenging circumstances. This service opportunity helps set members on their career paths, and allows our partner agencies to dramatically expand their community reach and impact.”

The 2020-2021 funding will support AmeriCorps programs with:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico
  • DreamTree Project
  • EcoServants/Sierra Blanca Service Corps
  • Families and Youth Inc.
  • Mandy's Special Farm
  • NACA-Inspired Schools Network
  • New Mexico First (Planning grant)
  • Not Forgotten Outreach, Inc.
  • Rocky Mountain Youth Corps
  • Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico
  • Teach for America

AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend during their term of service, and are eligible to receive an education award that can be used to pay for college or to pay off student loans.

AmeriCorps funding is intended for recruiting, placing, and supporting AmeriCorps members serving communities throughout New Mexico. For more information visit www.dws.state.nm.us/nmccv.
